„Speaking of CompUSA, they have some good sales this week. Not only are those prices on blank media good, they have an 8x DVD burner on sale for $80 (branded Mad Dog, it's actually a rebranded NEC drive). They are already sold out online...“

Some slightly related:
„John Le Carré still writes beautifully, but this former master spywriter's latest book ” set partly in the post 9/11, post-Iraq War world ” boasts all the political nuance and acumen of a Ted Rail America-hating screed. It's a genuine pity to see that he's become a barking moonbat who's only a half-step back (if that) from the folks who seriously insist that the CIA directed the 9/11 attacks on instructions from Evil Dubya & Co. Once an author whom I eagerly bought in hardbound, he'll get no more of my bookbuying dollars (or pounds sterling or Euros).“http://www.beldar.org/beldarblog/2003/09/ im_almost_speec.html - Cached

„Daily Kos: In the 'nothing too petty' department, the Iraqi provisional authority (or whatever they're calling them today) has squashed plans for an Iraqi cell phone network because it was being set up according to the same standard used by the rest of the world, which of course excludes American telcoms from bidding. Some insightful comments about the energy reform fiasco . How Bush is getting into a world of unecessary trouble by officially coming out against gay marriage.“http://www.pacificviews.org/archives/ 000028.html - Cached

„This post-your-own interview thing is spiraling into interesting new directions, and the trend cuts both ways. Sheila Lennon today posted an item on her blog ("Me and my different drummer") recounting her email exchange with Mark G. and recalling the transcript of the New York Times interview she posted on her personal blog one year ago, which helped kick off this trend.“http://www.jdlasica.com/blog/archives/ 2003_09_17.html - Cached
„The most negative take on the book came fromRalph McGehee, the compiler of CIABASE, who found nothing positivein the book, and concluded that "it is difficult to believe anythinghe [Gates] says." (Comments posted in the news group.) McGehee'sis an unnecessarily harsh judgment. Virtually all writers of memoirs (McGeheeamong them) use the occasion to tell the story their way. Readers of thosememoirs have to make judgments about the credibility of the writer basedon their own knowledge of the subject area.“http://intellit.muskingum.edu/genpostwwii_folder/.../ postwarcwendgates.html - Cached

„And that will allow you to get a sense of the context they are speaking to. After each speaker speaks we will then, I'll try to ask a question that will get the other two panelists to respond to something that speaker has said. And then we'll open it up to the floor for 10 minutes or so of Q and A.“http://web.mit.edu/cms/games/aesthetics.html - Cached
„At 88, McNamara looks surprisingly healthy -- the kind of guy you'd expect to still be around and ambulatory at 98 (provided he gets that worrying discolored spot near his hairline looked at pronto). His answers to the questions Morris delivers from offstage are fluid, insightful, and McNamara exhibits an uncanny attentiveness, never drifting off, always utterly focused. He's intelligent, reflective, doubting, regretting.“http://www.cadence90.com/blogs/ 2004_03_01_nixon_archives.html - Cached
„That is, as the liberal arts sink lower and lower in public esteem (and sink lower and lower even in the eyes of some liberal arts professors themselves, who are prepared to argue that the teaching of the liberal arts is of so little value that it can be performed by an academic underclass), the cultural gatekeepers to the liberal arts respond to this degradation by seeking to inflate the value, as it were, of a select group of its professors. I doubt very much this is the result of market forces, though we have had so many discussions of markets here at this blog that I am no longer sure just what is meant by the term. I believe that while students and their tuition-paying parents (I am speaking here of elite superstar-recruiting institutions) are certainly paying for the prestige of star faculty, they have no idea of just how wide the gap has grown between the haves and have-nots and have very little conception of just how underpaid and unsupported are the part-timers who teach many of their classes.“http://www.invisibleadjunct.com/archives/ 2003_06.html#000178 - Cached

„I’m not inclined to take seriously those critiques based on bubbles or based on supposed inefficiencies of market behaviour, at least not unless they have some explanation of why these are particular flaws of market behaviour, rather than general organisational pathologies of groups of homo sapiens. I am always in favour of people being made to put their money where their mouth is when they’re shouting off about questions of global importance, and as Henry notes in the piece linked above, one of the potential functions that the PAM might have served would be as a means for low-ranking CIA officials to signal their genuine opinions, rather than those which were politically correct at the CIA. This is obviously not a first-best solution; first best would be a culture of honesty at the CIA.“http://www.crookedtimber.org/archives/ 000340.html - Cached

„Some of the more familiar titles, such as Scarlet Letter and Pride & Prejudice, lured people to the series so they could re-read books that were perhaps not their favorite reading material in high school or college. These titles were the honey, so to speak, while authors such as Turgenev or Fontane could be considered the medicine of this series. But as is often the case with medicine, once it is consumed, one is glad to have it around and can acknowledge it wasn’t nearly as bad as was feared.“http://www.uwyo.edu/wch/arcbte.htm - Cached

„My wife paid about twice that for my Plextor 10x12x32 CD-RW burner about 2.5 years ago (I still love that drive, by the way)! I only found one review of the drive, but that person seemed happy. According to them it's rebranded NEC, so it can't be all bad, can it?“http://tantalus.dnsalias.net/eblo/archives/ cat_ramble.html - Cached
